Products Description
17-4PH Stainless Steel is an extremely versatile material that stands out among other stainless steels due to its outstanding properties. This grade has exceptional corrosion resistance and heat retention capabilities which makes it perfect for various industries such as automotive, aerospace, medical, construction, and more.
Material
17-4PH stainless steel is made up of chromium and nickel, providing excellent corrosion resistance against many corrosive substances. It is also highly resistant to stress cracking, fatigue cracking, and pitting. The high level of chromium ensures that this grade does not rust or corrode even in harsh environments.
Specification
17-4PH stainless steel is available in both austenitic (ASTM A240) and ferritic grades (ASTM A210). The austenitic grade offers better chemical resistance compared to the ferritic grade. The ferritic grade provides higher mechanical properties but lower corrosion resistance. Both grades come with a variety of temper levels including T1, T2, and T3. The T1 and T2 grades are typically used in applications requiring high strength while the T3 grade is preferred for low alloying applications.
Size
17-4PH stainless steel comes in different sizes depending on the application requirements. Common sizes include 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1", 1-1/4", 1-1/2", and 2". Larger sizes may require custom cutting services. The thickness ranges from 0.05mm to 2mm.
Usage Scenarios
17-4PH stainless steel finds extensive use in manufacturing industries where it is crucial to maintain cleanliness and prevent contamination. Some common applications include
a) Medical Devices Used in surgical instruments, implants, and other medical devices.
b) Aerospace Components For structural parts like fuselage, wings, and engine components.
c) Automotive Parts For engine covers, radiators, and other exterior parts.
d) Construction Materials For building structures, bridges, and railings.

Questions and Answers
Q What is the maximum temperature at which 17-4PH stainless steel can withstand without damage?
A At temperatures up to 850°C (1532°F), 17-4PH stainless steel remains unaffected, allowing for high-performance in manufacturing processes.
Q How is 17-4PH stainless steel classified based on its temper levels?
A 17-4PH stainless steel is available in two temper levels, T1 and T2. The T1 grade is generally recommended for higher-strength applications, while the T2 grade is suitable for applications that demand higher flexibility.
Q Can 17-4PH stainless steel be heat treated to increase its strength?
A Yes, 17-4PH stainless steel can be heat treated to improve its mechanical properties. However, excessive heat treatment can lead to degradation of its corrosion resistance, so it's essential to perform the treatment under controlled conditions.
